Tips for Electric Motor Storage

Tips for Electric Motor StorageMany electric motors are stored until they are needed when not used for daily jobs. It is important that you take the proper steps to store your electric motor to ensure that it is ready to use when needed. Listed below you will find some general tips for storing electric motors for short and long terms. If you have any additional questions be sure to speak with an electric motor specialist.

Short Term Storage

For short term storage you will want to do everything possible to protect the motor from the elements, including damp conditions and extreme heat. You will also want to place it somewhere in which it won't be exposed to vibrations. Ideally you will want to store the motor indoors, but if outdoor storage is necessary be sure to wrap it lightly with a rain proof tarp, but leave room for airflow to avoid condensation. Consider using a space heater to maintain a consistent temperature under the tarp.

Long Term Storage

There are a few more things to consider when storing an electric motor for weeks at a time or more.

  • Location - Utilize an indoor location that will protect it from weather and vibrations, including those caused by automotive traffic or trains.
  • Surface Prep - Utilize a rust inhibitor over the exposed surface areas. This will need to be done on a regular basis, especially if stored in a humid environment.
  • Shaft Rotation - It is necessary to rotate the shaft on a regular basis to damage to the bearings caused by fretting. Smaller motors should have their shafts rotated at least once per month. Larger motors, such as 1500 HP capacity of more, should be rotated once per week.
  • Bearings - Fill bearing cavities completely for long term storage. Make sure to use the proper grease or oil for your motor.
  • Windings & Brushes - Utilize space heaters to maintain a constant temperature to prevent degradation of the winding insulation. Lift brushes away from the commutator and/or slip rings. Place any springs in a relaxed position, if possible.

Storing a motor properly is important so that it's ready to go when you need it to be.
