Top Benefits of AC Motors

Top Benefits of AC MotorsWhen searching for a new electric motor a big question that regularly comes up is, "What is better, AC or DC?" Well there isn't a direct answer because each has their own benefits that makes their application and cost dependent on the needs of the project at hand. Here we will explore a few of the benefits of AC, or alternating current, motors, which are used in a wide variety of tools and other items.

Low power demand to start

AC motors do not require as much electrical power as other motor forms in order to start working. This can be beneficial when working with generators or other low power suppliers.

Controlled acceleration

A great feature of AC motors is that you can control acceleration of the motor to avoid rapid speed increasement. This is the case with electric golf carts and certain power saws that speed up the blade.

Adjustable operation speed

Similarly, AC motors can be used at variable operational speeds. Using the examples above, this means you can drive your golf cart at a steady speed, while accelerating and slowing. The same with the saw blade. You can speed it up or slow it down to make the type of cuts necessary for your project.

Types of AC Motors

Two primary types of AC motors include synchronous and induction.

  • Synchronous - In this type of motor the rotation of the rotor and the frequency of the supply current are synchronized, allowing the speed to remain constant under varying loads. This type of motor is often used in robots, machine and process control and instrumentation.
  • Induction - Also known as asynchronous, induction motors use induction from the magnetic field of the stator winding to create an electric current in the rotor. These are most often used in pumps, conveyor belt systems and lifting machines, such as escalators.
