The stator contains windings or permanent magnets, which remain stationary during operation. To reduce energy losses, the stator is made with thin metal linings known as laminations, instead of a solid core was used.

Air Gap

The air gap is not a physical gap, but it is important to talk about. This gap comes between the rotor and stator. It must be a specific size to ensure the magnetic fields used by the motor to produce power interact as designed to do so. If the gap is off, it could prevent any power from being created.


This commutator is used in certain types of electric motors and generators to periodically reverse the current direction between the rotor and the external circuit.


Windings are coils of wire that are connected to the commutator segments. Windings are necessary to produce a magnetic field so that electromagnetic induction can take place in the machine.
