How should I store my electric motor?

If you have an electric motor that you don't use on a day-to-day basis, then there's a good chance you'll be storing it for extended stretches. With poor storage technique, your electric motor could suffer significant problems, especially if it becomes exposed to water or excessive heat. If your electric motor does develop problems, our staff at Industrial Motors & Machining can expertly diagnose the issue and then get right to work on repairing it. But to prevent problems from arising in the first place, you'll want to find a dry place indoors to store your electric motor. But if you have no choice but to store your electric motor outside, then you'll want to enclose it in a 100% waterproof tarp. When wrapping your motor in a tarp, it'll be best to leave a bit of airflow so that condensation is minimized.

Tips for Electric Motor Storage

You'll want to prepare your electric motor for storage by applying a rust inhibitor to surface areas. If the motor is stored in an area that is particularly humid, you'll want to periodically reapply the rust inhibitor. There are certain mechanical matters that should also be taken into consideration. Before shelving your electric motor for a long period of time, it's best to fill bearing cavities. And you'll want to rotate shafts weekly on motors that have an HP capacity of 1500 or more, which helps to prevent fretting from causing damage to bearings. Also, springs should be relaxed and you'll want to lift brushes away from the commutator and/or slip rings.

Proper Electric Motor Storage Location

For optimal protection, it's always best to choose an indoor location for electric motor storage. But even indoors, there are some precautions to take. Ideally, you'll have a place where the motor won't be exposed to regular vibrations, whether from passing traffic or nearby tool use. And because electric motors could catch the eyes of thieves, it's preferable to choose a location behind locked doors and not easily visible through a window.
