Everyday people power up machines both big and small that are operated by electric motors. For many people these machines allow them to complete their work, their livelihood. From welders to water pumps these machines take a lot of abuse, which is why it is important to ensure they are regularly serviced. While many services only need to be completed on an annual basis, it doesn't hurt to regularly check the parts of your electric motor to ensure everything is properly operating and not at risk of breaking down. Set up a maintenance schedule with a local electric motor repair shop to conduct the following checks to ensure your machines stay up and running.
Inspect the oil rings
Make sure the rings do not suffer from excessive play, as this could lead to oil leaking.
On at least an annual basis the air gap between the rotor and stator should be checked with a feeler gauge. Take measurements at the bottom, top, and on both sides of the stator. Any differences in readings obtained from check to check indicate wearing bearings.
Belts should be regularly checked for proper tension. The motor manual should indicate the amount of play that should be allowed, however sheaves should usually have little or no play. Couplings should always be tight and within tolerances, and should not produce excessive noise while operating.
Brushes should be checked for excessive wear, type, conductivity, hardness and fit. Instances of excessive brush chatter or wear, or sparking often indicate a larger problem at hand.
Motor mount inspection
It is important to inspect motor mounts to ensure that there is not sufficient play that could lead to vibrations which may damage the motor and other parts of the machine. Look for cracking or warping around the mounts.
Routine inspections and maintenance will help your electric motors last much longer.
