Thomas Davenport of Vermont is credited with developing the first real electric motor, meaning it was the first motor powerful enough to complete a task. While other people had created motors before him, they simply spun or wobbled and were unable to do any real job. Davenport's first motors were used to power a toy trolley around a track.

These are direct current, DC, which is mostly used for heavy duty applications that require a high starting torque and compact design, and alternating current, AC, which are used when precise control of speed and power output are required.
